You can hate your boss,suck up to her,or simply hope for a change – or you can learn how to dealt with her , says Reylyn Romilla-Salvador . You spend most of your waking hours at the office, so it’s only logical to want to make your environment as stress free as possible. But how do you manage that when you got a Devils-Wears Prada-esque boss breathing down your neck? Consider the following tips for managing upwards, and you may just create a more harmonious relationship with your boss- and more enjoyable workplace.
1. LEARN TO READ YOUR BOSS’S MIND.
No two bosses are alike. Each one has her own work ethic, style, and quirks. The first rule in managing your bosses effectively is to understand who they are and what they want. Is she a morning person, or does her enegry level pick up in the afternoon? Is she more visual than auditory? Understanding your boss is crucial to figuring out how to best relate with her.
2. ADAPT TO YOUR BOSS’S WORK STYLE.
Once you’ve figured out what your boss is like and how she works, adjust the way you work.When you know your boss wants written updates rather than verbal updates, feed on this-spend time completing those reports rather than relying on giving updates during meetings. Work with your boss’s styles, never against it.
3. BE POSITIVE.
Admittedly, it’s hard to be upbeat when the boss is on the warpath. I am strong advocate of positive energy. It may take time to be able to practice a more constructive and positive way of reacting to a boss that just drives you crazy. But surprising the boss with a kind act or reaction or will, at the very least, jolt your boss to a realization of her unprofessional ways.
4. KEEP YOUR BOSS INFORMED.
No one likes to be kept in the dark especially your boss, so make sure you keep communication lines open. A poorly informed boss cannot advocate your needs or make the best decisions for your organization. Keep your boss informed at the level that fits his or her work style. Don’t report just the good news and leave out the bad. When you run into a problem, let her know immediately. But be sure not to bring a problem to her without offering some possible solutions – you want to be seen as a problem -solver , not merely a harbinger of bad news.
5. BE PROFESSIONAL
Know when to draw the line when it comes to being friendly with the boss . Drawing the line may prevent one from being complacent at work, from developing unreasonable expectations from the boss and organization. The other positives of maintaining professionalism is that it helps your boss assess your performance objectively, and she can even become a good coach or mentor to you.
6. BE ON YOUR BOSS’S SIDE.
If your boss expresses an opinion about a thing, person or project, your best bet is just to nod and keep your mouth shut. You don’t actually have to endorse the boss’s point of view, but you certainly don’t want to challenge it. If your boss asks for your opinion, make it clear that it’s what she thinks that counts. The boss needs to make a lot of decisions, and while you can’t be happy with every decision made, the team functions best when everyone supports the decisions, even the unpopular ones.
7. DO YOUR PART.
When you’re criticized, take it gracefully. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you. It’s reasonable for your boss to have certain expectations of you. Belding lists six: communication, compliance , support, effort , attitude, and results. Before you go on a tirade of complaints about your boss, it’s a good idea to evaluate yourself and determine if you’ve been delivering your end of bargain. If not, then focus on improving your weak areas. For all you know . while you’ve been ranting about your terror boss , she’s been at her wit’s end about you, her She- Devil employee.
MY HUMBLE OPINION :
There are number of significant changes that affect your career, and you must be constantly aware of these new rules. In the past, you’d be all right if you just don’t do anything silly. The rule then was simple: don’t make waves. Today, the powers-be-will never notices unless you make a significant wave. Challenge the old ways that don’t work, innovate, provide solutions and create value in every work situation you are in, in whatever level of the organization you are. Don’t sit there.
You were always told that you must separate you work life from your personal life. But today, what you do after office hours is a major concern of your employer. It seems that your work life never stops. Years ago, you have to be in your office in order to communicate. There are a hundred and one other rules that sound strange but they affect your career just the same.
In the old workplace, you don’t question the boss – he is usually the most knowledgeable in the team. Today’s new rules suggest that you make sure that the boss knows as much as you do – at least in public. Never make him look stupid, even if he is. It’s your job to make your boss look great. If he gets promoted because you made him larger than life, chances are that he will recommend you to take his place.
In life and in career, it always pays to have more people on your side. Like they say, you have to be nice to the people you meet on your way up. They’re the same people you’ll meet on your way down. It never ceases to amaze me how the Golden rule to be true today in life and in career. We make ripples whenever we interact with others, and what goes around usually comes around.
In life and in business, we can never say that it’s purely business. We can’t help being personal. By and large, people are highly visual. They make decisions on the basis of impressions they see or hear about you. If you want to succeed in life and in career, do not lose by default by just letting others form their impressions about you without a little help from you. Also “no news “is bad news!
